Chapter 6 Summary
In this chapter Dill and Jem sneak out and go to the Radley house. Scout also comes with Dill and Jem and they all peak through the windows. They see a mans shadow with a hat on. They all run as fast as the can and hear a shotgun noise go off behind them. They have to climb under a fence where Jem gets his pants stuck and has to take them off to free himself. They return home and find all the neighborhood adults talking together. Later that night Jem goes to get his pants back.
Chapter 6 Analysis
In chapter six marks many beginnings and endings. The kids finish there second summer with Dill. Many of the events that are taking place in this chapter are leading up to how Jem broke his arm. Which Scout talked abot in the first chapter. This chapter leads up to relationships that will take place with Boo Radley.
Chapter 7 Summary
Chapter 6 Analysis
In chapter six marks many beginnings and endings. The kids finish there second summer with Dill. Many of the events that are taking place in this chapter are leading up to how Jem broke his arm. Chapter 7 Summary
A couple of days later, after school starts, Jem tells Scout that he found his pants hung nicely over the fence. As they are coming home from school one day they another gift in the knothole. A ball of gray twine. After a couple days later they find another gift in the knothole. This time its two figures carved from soap that look like Jem and scout. They get some more gifts after that. The next day they find the knothole filled with cement. Mr. Radley says that he filled it because the tree was dying.
Chapter 7 Analysis
Boo Radley is originally portrayed as mean and a freak. But in this chapter you see him as more sympathetic to Jem and Scout. For instance the pants being nicely hung over the fence. Boo also puts the gifts in the knothole.
Chapter 8 Summary
This year is the first time in many years that Maycomb gets a real winter. That night Atticus, Jem and Scout go outside and see Miss Maudies house on fire. Many of the neighbors try to help save the things inside of her house, but lots of it burns to the ground. While this is happening someone puts a blanket over Scout. Later Jem realizes that Boo Radley put the blanket over her and he tells the whole story about the knothole. The next day Miss Maudie is surprisingly happy since her house burnt down but she says she wishes she were there to see Boo Radley put the blanket over Scout so she could catch him.
Chapter 8 Analysis
In this chapter when Maycomb gets a real winter Scout believes that the world is going to end. This shows her innocence but Atticus reassures her. When Jem builds a snowman its first made of mud until Scout comes up to him and says "Jem, i ain't ever heard of a nigger snowman." This shows how blacks are looked at in the community. They aren't judged by the way they look but there relationship with white people.
Chapter 9 Summary
When Scout is at school she almost starts a fight with Cecil Jacobs. They almost start to fight because Cecil says that Scout's dad "defends niggers." A black man named Tom Robinson has been accused of raping a white woman and Atticus has been asked to defend him. During Christmas time Atticus's brother Jack comes to visit. This year Scout is not getting along with Jack like she usually does.
Chapter 9 Analysis
In this chapter Jem and Scout see the prejudice that surrounds them. Since Scout almost gets in a fight with a classmate Atticus teaches tolerance. While Atticus is unsure if he should defend Tom Robinson he gets a learns to use courage. Atticus realizes he should stand up for whats right. All the people who are saying bad things about Atticus wont get to him because he will fight for whats right.
Chapter 10 Summary
In this chapter Scout says that Atticus is older than most of the fathers in Maycomb. Atticus doesn't enjoy doing most of the activities the other dads do. One day a mean dog was infront of the Finche's home. Atticus shoots the animal perfectly with the rifle that Heck Tate gives him. Later that day Miss Maudie tells Scout and Jem of how Atticus was an amazing shooter when he was younger.
Chapter 10 Analysis
In this chapter as part one is coming to an end Scout and Jem learn some pretty cool stuff about their father. Which will show why Atticus wants to defend Tom Robinson. The reasoning behind the title is explained in this chapter. Atticus warns Scout and Jem "It's a sin to kill a mockingbird." When Atticus says that it surprises both Scout and Jem because Atticus usually doesn't say anything is sinful.
Chapter 11 Summary
In this chapter Atticus, Jem and Scout are on their way to the business district in Maycomb where Mrs. Dubose house is. Atticus tells Jem to act like a gentleman since Mrs. Dubose is old and sick. One day Mrs.Dubose says Atticus is like the "niggers and the trash he works for." Jems gets really mad and destroys all her camellia bushes. For a punishment Atticus makes Jem go read to Mrs. Dubose everyday. About a month later Mrs. Dubose dies and later that day Atticus gives Jem a box he got from Mrs. Dubose and inside is a single white camellia flower.

In this chapter Atticus teaches Scout an Jem about courage through Mrs. Dubose and her morphine battle addiction. Atticus knows that Mrs. Dubose is courageous fighting this battle. Atticus wants his kids to know that courage isn't skill with a gun but standing up for what you believe in.
